Can an iPhone Check Your Body Temperature?

No, an iPhone cannot measure your body temperature on its own. It does not have a built-in medical thermometer, and downloading a thermometer app cannot give the phone a temperature-measuring sensor it does not have.

You can, however, use an iPhone with a compatible smart thermometer to view and store readings. You can also manually record measurements in Apple Health. Certain Apple Watch models track overnight wrist temperature changes, but they cannot replace a regular thermometer for checking your temperature on demand.

Can an iPhone Measure Body Temperature?

An iPhone is not designed to take a person’s body temperature directly. Its camera, Face ID system, and other user-facing sensors do not function as medical thermometers.

Although iPhones contain internal sensors that help the device manage its own operating temperature and protect components from overheating, those sensors are not intended to measure the temperature of your skin or body.

This means you cannot get a valid body temperature reading simply by placing an iPhone against your forehead or pointing its camera at your face. An iOS app also cannot create the missing measurement capability through software alone.

If an app claims to measure body temperature using only the iPhone camera or screen, it should not be treated as a substitute for a thermometer unless it is working with separate hardware designed to obtain the measurement.

How to Check Your Temperature With an iPhone

There are two practical ways to use an iPhone when monitoring body temperature.

1. Use a Smart Thermometer

A compatible smart thermometer takes the actual measurement and sends the result to an iPhone app, usually through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

  1. Choose a digital thermometer that supports an iPhone app.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s app.
  3. Pair or connect the thermometer if required.
  4. Take your temperature according to the device manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. View and save the reading in the app.

For example, Withings Thermo is a forehead thermometer that takes a temperature reading and can transfer measurement data to the Withings app.

The important distinction is that the thermometer measures your temperature. The iPhone is being used to display, organize, and store the information.

2. Record Temperature in Apple Health

You can also take your temperature with a regular digital thermometer and manually save the result in the Health app.

  1. Open the Health app on your iPhone.
  2. Use Search or browse the health categories to find Body Temperature.
  3. Tap Add Data.
  4. Enter the temperature along with the correct date and time.
  5. Tap Done to save the entry.

Menu names and placement can change slightly between iOS versions. Apple also allows compatible third-party apps and accessories to write supported information to Health when you grant permission. Apple’s Health data instructions explain how to enter information manually and manage data from connected apps and devices.

Apple Health stores and organizes the reading; it does not take the temperature itself.

Can Apple Watch Measure Body Temperature?

Some Apple Watch models have temperature sensors, but the feature works differently from a conventional thermometer.

Apple currently supports overnight wrist temperature tracking on Apple Watch Series 8 or later, all Apple Watch Ultra models, and Apple Watch SE 3.

The watch collects wrist temperature data while you sleep. To establish a personal baseline, Sleep must be set up with Track Sleep with Apple Watch enabled, and Sleep Focus must be active for at least four hours per night for about five nights.

After the baseline has been established, the watch can show how your nightly wrist temperature changes relative to that baseline.

How to See Wrist Temperature on iPhone

To view the data, open:

Health → Search → Body Measurements → Wrist Temperature

Apple explains in its wrist temperature guidance that this feature is not a medical thermometer. It cannot provide an on-demand temperature reading, and Apple does not intend it for medical diagnosis or treatment.

In other words, an Apple Watch can reveal overnight temperature trends, but you should not treat a wrist-temperature change as the same thing as checking your current body temperature with a thermometer.

Do iPhone Thermometer Apps Actually Work?

It depends on what the app is designed to do. Apps described as thermometers generally fall into several different categories.

Temperature tracking apps let you enter readings that were taken with a real thermometer. They can be useful for keeping a history but do not measure temperature themselves.

Smart thermometer apps communicate with compatible external hardware. In this case, the connected thermometer provides the measurement and the app displays or stores it.

Weather or room-temperature apps may show local weather data or readings from separate environmental sensors. These numbers are unrelated to your body temperature.

An app that uses only the standard hardware in an iPhone should therefore not be assumed to provide an accurate fever or body-temperature measurement simply because it displays a temperature result.

What’s the Best Way to Check for a Fever?

If you want to know your current body temperature, use a thermometer designed for that purpose rather than relying on an iPhone or Apple Watch temperature trend.

Common options include an oral digital thermometer, forehead thermometer, or ear thermometer. The accuracy of a reading depends on the device and whether it is used correctly according to its instructions.

Your iPhone can still be useful alongside the thermometer: it can store readings, display data from compatible connected devices, and help you review temperature changes over time. But the actual measurement needs to come from appropriate temperature-sensing hardware.
